History
In 1797 Venice had no choice but to give its territory in Croatia to Austria. After Napolean was defeated Austria took the territory. In 1847 the Croatian parliament made Croatian the official language. In 1848 revolutions occurred all across Europe and Hungary was overtaken by rebels. Despite that Hungarians and Croats fell out and went to war. The Austrian monarchy regained power and made them both a part of the Austrian Empire again. However the Austrian Empire divided in two halves between Austria and Hungary. Croatia was split, Dalmatia ruled by Austria, and most of Croatia ruled by Hungary. In the late 19th century Croatian nationalists were separated with two idea, a new state uniting all southern Slavs, or an independent Croatia. Croatia declared its independence October of 1918. The Croats joined with Slovenes and Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The Croats were disenchanted when it became a unitary state instead of federal.
King Alexander suspended parliament introducing a royal dictatorship and renaming the state to Yugoslavia in 1929. Two extremist parties arose in the 1930's, the Communists and the Fascist Ustase. Yugoslavia government granted Croatian autonomy in 1939. That year WWII began as well, the Germans set up a puppet state in Croatia with the Fascist Ustase in charge. Croatia was liberated by partisans in 1945 and a communist regime was imposed. Communism fell in most of Eastern Europe in 1989. In May of 1991 Croatians voted or independence, the Yugoslavians though invaded Croatia and a long war began. The EU nations recognized Croatian independence in 1992, and the war ended in 1995. In 2009 Croatia joined NATO, then the EU in 2013.
