Why it was formed: Teachers were being discriminated and treat unfairly.
Mission of Union: It was made to protect the rights of teachers, paraprofessionals, school related personnel, local, state, and staff, nurses and other s in healthcare related professionals. Also, to improve lives, provide job security, and give the members a legitimate voice.
Number of members: 889,347 as of 2009
Recent Issues: A Jewish school discontinued unionized contracts for the next year. AFT immediately wanted to negotiate to help the teachers out because they were shocked.
